Endodontic Surgery

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Endodontic Care

Endodontic Consultants of San Antonio specialize in treating inflammation and infection inside teeth. Pain and other distressing symptoms can accompany the trauma or conditions that cause such damage to the internal structure of the teeth. Our endodontists, Dr. Rick Schwartz, Dr. Rick Davis, and Dr. Zac Liang, have the advanced training to resolve these conditions at the source successfully. Our valued patients and  referring dentists in South Texas and beyond know they are in the best possible hands.

What are the signs that I need endodontic treatment?

Injuries to a tooth from decay or trauma are often associated with toothaches. The dental pulp inside of the tooth contains nerves and other tissues. These nerves are responsible for the sensation of pain. You may experience sensitivity, especially when biting or consuming sweet, hot, or cold foods and beverages. The pain may be persistent and so intense that it keeps you up at night and interferes with work, study, and other day-to-day activities.

Besides pain, what else should I watch for?

Infections can also produce swelling or pus-filled pockets that may look like red boils. These dental abscesses can spread to other parts of the face and body. They require prompt treatment. Additionally, discoloration or  tender gums can be indicative of a root canal infection. Remember: Every patient’s experience is different. We must evaluate your tooth to determine the problem and best course of action.

I’m concerned my tooth is infected. What should I do?

Call us immediately. We can almost always see patients with urgent problems the same day. If left untreated, infections have the potential to spread and cause irreparable damage to the affected tooth.

What are potential options for treatment?

All treatments start with a thorough evaluation. Depending on what our specialists find, nonsurgical root canal therapy may be appropriate. This procedure involves removing the damaged pulp tissue. For teeth that have been treated previously with root canal therapy, retreatment can heal the tooth once and for all. It may be the only way to restore the tooth to health. As endodontists, we are also equipped to provide surgical solutions. These solutions include “root-end resection” or “apicoectomy.”

Do not ignore signs of trouble. Contact Endodontic Consultants of San Antonio. Serving South TX and beyond, our specialty practice can be reached at (210) 405-0473.
