Root canals

The term “root canal” refers to the narrow spaces within the roots that contain nerves, blood vessels, and soft tissues that support tooth growth and sensation. The pulp within these spaces is protected by a layer of dentin and enamel. Unfortunately, decay and injury can damage these protective layers, leaving the pulp vulnerable to infection and injury.

Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment removes the infected tissue and nerves to relieve pain, eliminate infection and preserve the affected tooth. Contrary to its reputation, root canal treatment can be performed painlessly. Sometimes infected teeth are hard to numb, but every tooth can be rendered completely numb with proper anesthetic techniques. For the initial injections, the gums are numbed first and the shots are given slowly and gently to minimize any discomfort.

In most cases, treated teeth feel better immediately. There may be some residual tenderness following the procedure, but it typically goes away after a day or two. Avoid chewing on that side of the mouth during this time.

There is a misconception that the tooth is “dead” after root canal treatment. Your tooth will actually be no different than your other teeth, except it will no longer feel cold or heat. Although the nerves are removed from inside the tooth, there are still nerves and vessels surrounding the tooth, so it is not “dead.” 

Treatment alternatives

Although root canal treatment has a high success rate. Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Davis sometimes “re-do” treatment that was performed inadequately the first time.  The procedure is referred to as “retreatment.”  Retreatment can save some teeth that do not heal after their initial treatment.
