Traumatic Injuries

Saving teeth after Traumatic Dental Injuries

Traumatic dental injuries can occur at any time but are often associated with sports activities or accidents. Chipped teeth are the most common type of dental injury and are easily remedied. However, more severe traumatic dental injuries such as teeth that are displaced or “knocked-out” are a real cause for concern. At Endodontic Consultants of San Antonio, we recommend patients get any type of dental injury checked out so that we can assess the severity of the situation and recommend appropriate treatment options, if needed. As experienced endodontists, we have the knowledge, advanced skills and technology necessary to save injured teeth in most cases.

Cracked Teeth

While chipped teeth can often be repaired with dental bonding, cracked teeth require more extensive care. Individuals with cracked teeth may experience symptoms such as pain and tooth sensitivity. These symptoms may be constant or come and go while eating and drinking. When left untreated, cracks  can lead to infection of the tooth, surrounding gum tissue and bone.

Treatment for cracked teeth depends on the severity of the crack. If the crack extends into the pulp (nerve), the tooth may require a root canal procedure followed by the placement of a crown (cap) to prevent it from worsening. If the crack is severe, surgery may be necessary to save the tooth.

Teeth that are Avulsed (Knocked Out)

Did you know that even if you have a tooth knocked out, there is a possibility of saving it? When it comes to avulsed teeth, time is crucial, and some quick thinking and emergency action can often save the day.

If a tooth is avulsed, it is important to follow these steps:

  • When you pick the tooth up, hold it by the crown portion only, being careful to not touch the root.
  • If the tooth was on the ground or a dirty surface, gently rinse it off.  Saline is best if available, but milk or plain water will do.
  • If you can, place the tooth gently back into the socket and hold it in place
  • If it’s not possible to put it back in the socket, put it in a saline solution or milk.  Many sports facilities stock “Save-a tooth” jars containing a saline solution for just this purpose
  • Call our office immediately and come over as quickly as possible, ideally in less 30 minutes.  We will see the injured party right away, assess the situation and provide appropriate treatment.

At Endodontic Consultants of San Antonio, Drs. Rick Davis and Rick Schwartz are experts in dealing with traumatic dental injuries.  There are specific protocols that must be followed to the letter to achieve a favorable outcome.  If you have any questions, call us today at (210) 405-0473.
